Lessons From The Poor

Alvaro Vargas Llosa’s book Lessons From The Poor received this year’s Templeton Freedom Award for its contribution to free market solutions to poverty.

Vargas Llosa of the Independent Institute put together a book that brings various authors and their experiences together. They all interacted with people struggling with poverty in Peru, Argentina, Nigeria and Kenya – and contrasted them and their experience with countries that were once deemed poor and hopeless, such as Spain, Vietnam and Estonia but have seen their economic fortunes turn despite persistent problems.  What he finds is nothing short of amazing: real-life stories of entrepreneurs who made it in the toughest environments that exist today. I hope they’re imitated well and often!
