The Pope and the CEO > Blog Post Description

  • Embracing Uniqueness

Seth Godin’s latest book, We Are All Weird, was released yesterday, and Seth introduces us to the book on his blog. The idea of the book, as Seth puts it in his blog, is that times have changed so that there really is no “normal” anymore, at least not the way we conceive of it. Normal is so ingrained in what we do every day that it’s difficult to notice that your tendency toward the normal is now obsolete. What we need to do now, is embrace what is unique about ourselves so that we can make a difference. The important thing, I believe, is to make sure that this doesn’t amount to reckless individualism and rather tends toward a fulfillment of the person that God made each of us to be. I haven’t read the book yet, but I look forward to it, and I’m sure any fans of Seth’s other books are going to be among the first as well. When you read it, give us your review and tell us what you think.

  • What Do You Think Is Critical To Success?

This is a really interesting post by PersonalMBA. It takes several lists from different sources of what competencies are needed in order to be considered educated. Then they make a list of their own. Here’s a few of the things they’ve listed: The ability to work in teams without guidance. Rapport – how to interact with other people in a way that encourages them to like, trust, and respect you. Depth of knowledge in a particular field. The ability and discipline to do right. Take a look at the post and the lessons that they gathered from it. Then make a list of your own, and feel free to share it with us in the comments!

  • Is Obedience Detrimental To Success?

Seth Godin wrote this blog post a couple of days ago, saying that obedience holds us back. Self-control is what we need, but just doing what we’re told is only going to ensure our failure. Of course, Seth is arguing from a purely professional mindset, and as Christians we are also called to focus on the spiritual side of things. I would argue that obedience has great value. It is obviously one of the three evangelical counsels that religious men and women are called to live out. But what about for lay people? From St. John of the Cross: God wants from us the least degree of obedience and submission, rather than all the works we desire to offer Him. In other words, it doesn’t matter what we accomplish professionally if we are not following the will of God. And to follow the will of God does not just mean that we discern what His will is. Rather, we need to make an active choice to obey God’s will. So the great value of obedience is to conform our lives to God’s will. And this can often be done in a situation where we have someone else as our direct… Read more

  • Virtue Leads To Happiness

Brian Johnson, author of A Philosopher’s Notes, talks in this posting from a few months agoabout what proponents of positive psychology figured out: virtue is an essential ingredient for happiness! Do you want to be happy? Lead a good life. And good does not necessarily mean pleasure, but virtue. As Johnson puts it in his post: In fact, the researchers identified a constellation of six core virtues: wisdom, courage, love, justice, temperance and spirituality. They set out to *scientifically* establish that, when we put these virtues in action, we’ll live with more happiness, meaning and mojo. This is what we are taught from a Catholic perspective as well. The more we grow in virtue, the more we are making a choice for the good and the true – all of which leads to greater freedom, freedom to become more fully the person we were meant to be. And what could make us happier than true fulfillment as sons and daughters of God?

  • Do Clients Only Care About Results?

Seth Godin says no. I tend to agree. He says clients are looking for results, thrills, and ego. Not necessarily all three at once, but at least one of the three. I think often we try to provide our clients with results, ignoring the other two. Seth’s examples of companies that have focused on the other two show us how much of a difference they can make: The Ritz Carlton is all about #3, ego, right? And on a good day, there’s a perception that the guys at Apple are hellbent on amazing us yet again, delivering on #2 (ed: thrills), taking huge career and corporate risks on our behalf. As soon as they stop doing that, the tribe will get bored. We certainly do want to offer our clients a good return on their investment, but we need to keep in mind that they are not simply bank accounts that are looking to grow, but people who are growing and developing as human beings. What do you think?
