    Most Ethical Companies – 2012

The Ethisphere Institute compiles a list of the world’s most ethical companies each year. We have blogged about this in the past. They are currently taking nominations for next year’s most ethical companies. Do you have a company that you would like to nominate? From their website: The World’s Most Ethical Companies (WME) methodology analyzes companies that go beyond making statements about doing business ‘ethically’, to translate those words into action. WME winners demonstrate real and sustained ethical leadership within their industries, putting the Council’s credo of “Good. Smart. Business. Profit.” into real business practice. Think about the companies you know, and if there is one that stands out in the way they conduct business, do your best to make sure that they are recognized.

  • Embracing Uniqueness

Seth Godin’s latest book, We Are All Weird, was released yesterday, and Seth introduces us to the book on his blog. The idea of the book, as Seth puts it in his blog, is that times have changed so that there really is no “normal” anymore, at least not the way we conceive of it. Normal is so ingrained in what we do every day that it’s difficult to notice that your tendency toward the normal is now obsolete. What we need to do now, is embrace what is unique about ourselves so that we can make a difference. The important thing, I believe, is to make sure that this doesn’t amount to reckless individualism and rather tends toward a fulfillment of the person that God made each of us to be. I haven’t read the book yet, but I look forward to it, and I’m sure any fans of Seth’s other books are going to be among the first as well. When you read it, give us your review and tell us what you think.

  • The Catholic Church Wants More African Businesses

It only seems right that the person in need of development (and we all are) should be at the forefront of that development – not just economic, but spiritual, physical, intellectual, emotional, etc. A symposium held in Rome recently, organized by the Harambe Entrepreneur Alliance and the Acton Institute, proposed just that: more businesses in Africa, created by African businesspeople. This is no doubt something that we are in favor of here at Faith and Prosperity. Hopefully men and women in Africa will answer the call from the symposium.

  • Do Clients Only Care About Results?

Seth Godin says no. I tend to agree. He says clients are looking for results, thrills, and ego. Not necessarily all three at once, but at least one of the three. I think often we try to provide our clients with results, ignoring the other two. Seth’s examples of companies that have focused on the other two show us how much of a difference they can make: The Ritz Carlton is all about #3, ego, right? And on a good day, there’s a perception that the guys at Apple are hellbent on amazing us yet again, delivering on #2 (ed: thrills), taking huge career and corporate risks on our behalf. As soon as they stop doing that, the tribe will get bored. We certainly do want to offer our clients a good return on their investment, but we need to keep in mind that they are not simply bank accounts that are looking to grow, but people who are growing and developing as human beings. What do you think?

  • What Importance Do You Place On Relationships?

We often look at any of our relationships that have visible problems and look at how to fix them. How often do we look at those that do not have visible problems and see how we can make them better? Seth Godin reminds us that we always need to be evaluating our friendships and working relationships to make sure that they are in good order. From a Christian perspective, this should not be seen as a way to keep networks open and increase opportunities, but part of the virtue of friendship, which feeds into the theological virtue of love or charity. We should always be searching to grow in our love for others – not a simple investment in relationships, but actually giving of ourselves to others.
